ArduiPod Box: A low-cost and open-source Skinner box using an iPod Touch and an Arduino microcontroller

Abstract: This article introduces the ArduiPod Box, an open-source device built using two main components (i.e., an iPod Touch and an Arduino microcontroller), developed as a low-cost alternative to the standard operant conditioning chamber, or "Skinner box." Because of its affordability, the ArduiPod Box provides an opportunity for educational institutions with small budgets seeking to set up animal laboratories for research and instructional purposes. A pilot experiment is also presented, which shows that the ArduiPod… Show more

“…Each ROBucket costs less than US$150, which is 10-20 times cheaper than commercially available operant chambers. Although other homemade, open-source operant chambers have been developed, ROBucket is unique because of its simplicity and versatility (Pineño, 2014). ROBucket was designed to be easily produced by research laboratories and classrooms using almost entirely Boff the shelf^parts.…”

“…Science grows and improves with new tools [41], it is less constrained by other people's conceptions and allows for more creative solutions ( [41]; [42]). The scientific imagination also encourages innovation [43] (also one reason for the present paper), and it allows for better cross-disciplinary communication, even if a professional programmer or company does the actual development and programming [42]. If enough scientistprogrammers develop their observation tools this might stimulate the evolution of apps.…”
