“…The availability of a cheap, rapid and simple method of distinguishing between X and Y chromosome-bearing sperm, allowing ready assessment of the efficacy of separation techniques and elucidation of conditions for their optimal performance, may well have allowed greater progress in the separation of human X and Y sperm than that of livestock. It remains to be seen whether the recent report of successful F-body staining in a number of mammalian species (Ogawa et al 1988) results in its widespread use, or whether such methods will be superseded by less equivocal techniques based on sex chromosome specific probes. FCM analysis has also found a role in evaluating the success of such separation attempts (see Table 2) but the expense and technological sophistication of this technique currently confine it to a few laboratories.…”

“…Reports of successful F-body staining of bull sperm (termed B-bodies) after treatment with proteases (Bhattacharya 1975;Bhattacharya et al 1977) have remained largely unconfirmed. Despite great interest in such technology there have been few successes, the reported occurrence of F-bodies in the sperm of several mammalian species varying between 5 and 40% (Ogawa et al 1988). Our attempts to detect F-bodies in ram sperm following protease digestion or detergent treatment have also been unsuccessful.…”
