Are green wall technologies suitable for major transport infrastructure construction projects?

Abstract: Many city's current transport infrastructure is deemed to be inadequate for rapid population growth and projected urbanisation, driving an increase in the construction of more efficient and reliable transport infrastructure and networks. However, transport infrastructure projects have negative impacts on the environment, during both the construction and operational phases.Green wall technologies have become an increasing trend within urban areas to combat these impacts, however, their uptake has been limited. … Show more

“…Several commercial companies offer ready-to-use solutions and materials for simple design models which can facilitate DIY VGS installations. For example, multistory commercial systems may now offer wire trellis systems specifically designed to implement indirect green façades to cover wide building surfaces [ 62 ]. Nevertheless, support structures for small-scale or domestic VGSs can be easily constructed by recycling or upcycling disposed materials, such as sticks, nets and ropes.…”

“…The most addressed limit in the published documents is the economic one. There is a general lack of willingness as well as means to pay for a GF, considering the overall costs for planning, realizing and maintaining it, and given the long payback period and the non-monetary benefits provided [77][78][79][80][81]. The economic aspect is often closely related also to political and administrative issues.…”

“…The economic aspect is often closely related also to political and administrative issues. These mainly consist of insufficient strategies and regulations to promote GFs' implementation, such as incentives, financial support and simplified administrative procedures [79,82,83]. The inadequate institutional support for this technology is also responsible for social concern about the implementation of GFs.…”

“…In comparison, the system technology of GFs is simple and resource-efficient, and maintenance efforts are low [17]. Thus, GFs are easier and cheaper to implement and promise a better scalability than living walls [20].…”
