Are progranulin levels associated with polycystic ovary syndrome and its possible metabolic effects in adolescents and young women?

Abstract: Progranulin may be a novel biomarker for cardiovascular risk in patients with PCOS, thus these cases should be directed to close follow-up for possible cardiovascular diseases. Future larger studies should focus on this entity.

“…It is known that insulin resistance plays an important role in PCOS pathophysiology. In a recent study from Turkey, higher progranulin levels in women with PCOS were found compared with non-PCOS patients [19]. The authors proposed that cysteine-rich growth factors like progranulin may cause excessive early follicular growth as androgens.…”

“…In our research, in agreement with Moran et al [ 27 ], we found no differences in the DHEAS levels in women with PCOS with different BMIs. DHEA appears to have a positive effect on antral follicle number and ovarian volume in women undergoing assisted reproduction for primary failure [ 28 ]. Although approximately 40–70% of women with PCOS have elevated levels of DHEA-S, the correlation between DHEA-S level and the biochemical parameters of PCOS has not been thoroughly investigated [ 5 , 29 ].…”
