Are symptoms of depression more common in diabetes? Results from the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study

Abstract: After adjustment for relevant covariates, the association between depressive symptoms and Type 2 diabetes was heterogenous in our population-based study. In subjects with undiagnosed diabetes, however, depressive symptoms were less frequent in men. Co-morbidities and psychosocial conditions are strongly associated with depressive symptoms.

“…Results did not change in the sensitivity analyses. A pooled OR of 0.93 (95% CI 0.85–1.04) was obtained for the comparison of IGM versus NGM (2123,2628) and an OR of 1.04 (95% CI 0.85–1.28) for the comparison of UDD versus NGM (21,22,26,27,30). …”

“…Three comparisons were carried out for the prevalence of depression in UDD: 10 studies (18,19,21,22,2427,29,30) comparing with NGM, eight studies (18,19,21,22,2427) comparing with IGM, and eight studies (18,19,21,22,25,27,29,30) comparing with PDD. The I-squared statistic was moderately large for the comparison of UDD versus NGM (I-squared = 49.0%; P = 0.039 for the Cochran's Q test for heterogeneity), suggesting that the random-effects model was the most appropriate for this comparison.…”

“…Improvements in lifestyle are commonly required, and confections are usually strictly prohibited. However, strict diet therapy may have adverse effects, such as transitory hyperorexia and depression [11][12][13]. To help address these problems, we developed a jelly containing LEM that had suppressive effects on the increments in postprandial glucose and insulin secretion.…”
