Area deprivation and mortality in the provincial capital cities of Andalusia and Catalonia (Spain)

Abstract: Within cities, gender-related differences were revealed when deprivation was correlated geographically with mortality rates. These differences were found from an ecological perspective. Further research is needed in order to validate these results from an individual approach. The idea to be analysed is to identify those factors that explain these differences at an individual level.

“…The adult population in the case study region is around 17.5 million, giving an average adult population of each small area is just over 5000. A small area focus has certain advantages, as mentioned by Ocaña-Riola et al (2008): use of a relatively small geographical unit lessens ecological bias since people with similar social and demographic characteristics tend to cluster in the same area, and there will be an increase in homogeneity in risk factors related to social status within smaller geographic units.…”

“…More elaborated contextual variables like composite index of area deprivation (Carstairs, 1995;Ocana-Riola et al, 2008b), or the application of the ecometric methodology (Chaix et al, 2008;Fone et al, 2006;Messer, 2007;Mujahid et al, 2007;Raudenbush SW & Sampson RJ, 1999 ) appear conceptually to be more appropriate strategies than the simple aggregate measures of socioeconomic position that we used. However, simple measures of deprivation are highly correlated with more complicated ones, and therefore, yield similar information (Bingenheimer & Raudenbush, 2004;Folwell, 1995).…”

“…For example, this is the case of Rome and some cities in England and Wales (Michelozzi et al, 1999;Middleton et al, 2006Middleton et al, , 2008. Studies in Spain have related socio-economic deprivation in small areas with total mortality (Cano-Serral et al, 2009;Domínguez-Berjón et al, 2005;Esnaola et al, 2006;Nolasco et al, 2004Nolasco et al, , 2009Ocaña-Riola et al, 2008), but none have analyse injuries mortality in small urban areas. Thus, the aim of the present study is to analyse socioeconomic inequalities in mortality due to injuries in small areas of Spanish cities.…”
