“…We have reported that the thalamic glial cells up-regulate antigen-presenting cell-related molecule and N -methyl- D -aspartate receptor mRNAs following artificial exposure of rat pulp, suggesting that central sensi-tization caused via intra-pulpal nociceptive neurons stimulated by inflammation (Kaneko et al ., 2010). To confirm whether central sensitization occurred in the thalamic mediodorsal nucleus, we performed neuronal responsiveness recording of the rat mediodorsal nucleus following mustard oil application to the pulp.…”

“…After inferior alveolar nerve-transection of rats, glial fibrillary acidic protein-expressing cells show an increase in the ipsilateral Vc at 7 days, but not 1 day, post-operatively (Okada-Ogawa et al ., 2009). In our recent analysis, where unsealed pulp exposure was carried out for 1 day (Kaneko et al ., 2010), thalamic glial cells, including microglia and astrocytes, increased in number with an up-regulation of antigen-presenting cell-related molecule mRNAs. In the present analysis, we further found that gene expression levels of antigen-presenting cell-related molecules were increased in the contralateral thalamus shortly after the mustard oil application.…”
