Arts-Based Research Approaches to Studying Mechanisms of Change in the Creative Arts Therapies

Abstract: The purpose of this preliminary qualitative research study is to explore the role and function of multiple dynamic interactive aesthetic and intersubjective phenomena in the creative arts therapies process relative to transformation in perception, behavior, relationship, and well-being. A group of doctoral students and faculty studied these phenomena in an analogous creative arts therapies laboratory context using a method called Intrinsic Arts-Based Research. “…Further, it enhances levels of awareness by eliciting introjected object relationships, defense mechanisms, and inner conflicts and relational deprivation through symbolic communication and the reenactment of clients’ relational history within the therapeutic relationship. Moreover, through the manipulation of art materials, body movement, and sensory stimulation, art therapy provides joy, kinesthetic release, relief from stress, and facilitates the sublimation of aggression and affect regulation (Czamanski-Cohen & Weihs, 2016; Gerber, Bryl, Potvin, & Blank, 2018). “…We have taken a reductionist perspective of effectiveness; our inclusion criterion was studies using published mental health outcome measures, and we excluded qualitative studies. We acknowledge that this definition of effectiveness will not capture all effects, mechanisms, and dynamic processes of change occurring during arts-based therapies (Gerber et al, 2018 ). We did not screen gray literature or include end-user consultation, and we did not have resources to complete full independent screening and quality appraisals or translate and include articles not published in English.…”

“…Art making is inherently socio-cultural, and the idea that making art could inform our understanding of the world, communicate our wellbeing, or improve our mental health is well established (All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing, 2017). Art making allows us to connect and communicate on an intersubjective level (Dissanayake, 2000;Gerber, Bryl, Potvin, & Blank, 2018). Moreover, art making is a therapeutic technique for which there is no age boundary.…”
