Asking for Trouble

Abstract: The first thing you do when you begin your PhD is label your Endnote library “the woods.”  Your supervisor has warned you: you must not get lost.  I know you, your supervisor says, you’ll wander around forever, out there amongst the research. You’re too scared to tell them that you’ve already wandered off the beaten track, skirted around the signs that say "beware of the neurosis," and become entangled. According to the dictionary, neurosis is characterised by “obsessive thoughts and compulsive acts.” Perhap… Show more

“…Supporting cognitive tasks, as discussed in Section 2.3 and Section 2.4, can be done by direct manipulation of instruments, automating memory intensive tasks, and enhancing visual clarity. The flight deck design presented in this document uses two touchscreen displays to allow for direct manipulation of flight deck instruments, which improves SA and decreases workload (Suijkerbuijk et al, 2018;van Zon et al, 2019). Although touch accuracy is an issue during high turbulence situations, touchscreens present many advantages compared to trackball or rotary controllers, including higher overall performance and user satisfaction (Coutts et al, 2019;Suijkerbuijk et al, 2018).…”

“…Although touch accuracy is an issue during high turbulence situations, touchscreens present many advantages compared to trackball or rotary controllers, including higher overall performance and user satisfaction (Coutts et al, 2019;Suijkerbuijk et al, 2018). In addition, touchscreen interactions are highly familiar and intuitive, making them well suited to a wide range of applications (Norman, 1990;van Zon et al, 2019). Using touchscreens, pilots can interact with the flight deck through familiar gestures like tap, swipe, and drag.…”

“…Trigeminal-supplied bill-tip-organs are known from multiple families of probe-and tactile-foraging birds (e.g., Baumel and Witmer 1993, Berkhoudt 1980, Cunningham et al 2010, and the presence of lower densities of beak tactile sensors have been noted in other clades of birds (e.g., Genbrugge et al 2012, Van Hemert et al 2012. Extant crocodylians are known for having highly-sensitive snouts covered with integumentary sensory organs (ISOs).…”
