Asparagus Tetraploids from Callus Tissue1

Abstract: Ploidy levels were studied of asparagus plants propagated by rooted cuttings and callus tissue culture. A shift to the tetraploid condition was observed in the majority of plants derived via the callus tissue culture method and in rooted cuttings which developed callus as they rooted. Rooted cuttings without callus remained diploid. Meiotic abnormalities and low fertility were observed in the tetraploids.
