Prediction of sewing thread consumption requires an accurate method of calculation since it relates to the cost of manufacturing and distribution of apparel products. Previous researchers highlighted problems in existing thread consumption calculation methods; i.e. limitations in existing formulae which cause inaccurate predictions of thread amount needed for sewing operations. The existing methods of consumption calculations exhibit significant error percentages due to the ignorance of important parameters which affect on thread consumption. This paper investigates on correlation of thread tension to thread consumption of lock-stitch 301 and chain-stitch 401. The existing thread consumption formulae are optimized by considering a new parameter; thread tension, using regression analysis and geometrical modeling techniques. For the chain-stitch 401, results indicate that the thread tension significantly affects in determination of the thread consumption. The error analysis of proposed formulae was performed to indicate that the proposed formulae more accurate compared to the available methods of predicting sewing thread consumption. In addition, there are combined effects of thread tensions together with parameters such as fabric thickness and stitch density which determines accurate consumption values considering the properties of the stitch. In comparison, inclusion of the proposed thread tension variable depicts reduction in error percentages, so that the proposed formulae are expected to be a better approach to calculate thread consumption of lock-stitch 301 and chain-stitch 401.

During high speed sewing, the needle thread is exposed to dynamic loading, short strike loading, inertia forces, friction, rubbing, force of check spring, bending, pressure, friction, impact, shock and thermal influence. The dynamic thread loading/tension alters throughout the stitch formation cycle and along its passage through the machine. The greatest tensile force occurs at the moment of stitch stretching, when the take up lever pulls for required thread length through the tension regulator. These stresses act on the thread repeatedly and the thread passes 50-80 times through the fabric, the needle eye and the bobbin case mechanism, before getting incorporated into the seam, which result in upto 40% loss in tensile strength of the sewing thread. This damage in the sewing thread adversely affects its processing and functional performance. In this paper, the contribution of dynamic loading, passage through needle and fabric, and bobbin thread interaction in the loss in tensile properties has been studied. It is observed that the loss in tensile properties occurs mainly due to the bobbin thread interaction. Dynamic loading due to the action of take up lever also causes substantial loss in tenacity and breaking elongation of cotton threads.

Warp–weft directional bending properties of multistitched biaxial woven E-glass/polyester nano composites

The aim of this study was to understand the warp-weft directional bending properties of the developed two-dimensional multistitched multilayer E-glass/polyester woven nano composites. The warp-weft directional specific bending strengths and modulus of unstitched/nano composite structures were higher than those of the unstitched structures. Contrarily, the warp-weft directional specific bending strengths and modulus of unstitched structure were higher than those of the machine stitched and machine stitched/nano structures due to stitching caused filament breakages. When the stitching direction increased, the warp-weft directional bending strengths and modulus of the structures decreased. The warp-weft directional specific damaged areas of unstitched structure were higher than those of the multistitched and multistitched/nano structures. The addition of nano silica to the stitched structures improved their damage resistance slightly. It was generally found that when the number of stitching directions and stitching density in structures increased, the damaged areas of structures decreased. The failure of warp-weft directional multistitched and multistitched/nano woven E-glass/polyester composite structures was matrix breakages, partial and complete filaments, and yarn (tow) breakages in their surfaces. They had a local delamination in their cross-sections and the delamination did not propagate to the large areas due to multiple stitching. The failure was confined at a narrow area due to multistitching and resulted in the catastrophic fiber breakages. This was considered that the damage tolerance performance of the multistitched structures was enhanced due to stitching, in particular, at four directional stitching.
