Conifers are dominant tree species in boreal forests, but are susceptible to attack by bark beetles. Upon bark beetle attack, conifers release substantial quantities of volatile organic compounds known as herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs). Earlier studies of broadleaved plants have shown that HIPVs provide information to neighbouring plants, which may enhance their defences. However, the defence responses of HIPV-receiver plants have not been described for conifers. Here we advance knowledge of plant–plant communication in conifers by documenting a suite of receiver-plant responses to bark-feeding-induced volatiles. Scots pine seedlings exposed to HIPVs were more resistant to subsequent weevil feeding and received less damage. Receiver plants had both induced and primed volatile emissions and their resin ducts had an increased epithelial cell (EC) mean area and an increased number of cells located in the second EC layer. Importantly, HIPV exposure increased stomatal conductance and net photosynthesis rate of receiver plants. Receiver-plant responses were also examined under elevated ozone conditions and found to be significantly altered. However, the final defence outcome was not affected. These findings demonstrate that HIPVs modulate conifer metabolism through responses spanning photosynthesis and chemical defence. The responses are adjusted under ozone stress, but the defence benefits remain intact.

The World Health Organization estimates that every year air pollution kills seven million people worldwide. As it is expected that climate change will affect future air quality patterns, the full understanding of the links between air pollution and climate change, and how they affect human health, are challenges of future research. In this scope, a methodology to assess the air quality impacts on health was developed. The WRF-CAMx modelling framework was applied for the medium-term future climate (considering the SSP24.5 scenario) and for the recent past (considered as baseline). Following the WHO recommendations, mortality health indicators were used to estimate health impacts of long-term exposures. For that, the Aveiro Region, in Portugal, was considered as a case study. Future climate results indicate the occurrence of higher temperatures, and lower total precipitation. Despite that, improvements in the main pollutants’ concentrations, and consequently in the reduction of the related premature deaths are foreseen, mainly due to the reduction of pollutants emissions imposed by the European legislation for the upcoming years. The applied approach constitutes an added value in this research field, being crucial to anticipate the effects of climate change on air quality and evaluate their impacts on human health.

Bajo el lema "TIG al servicio de los ODS", con el XIX Congreso de Tecnologías de la Información Geográfica se ha querido contribuir a la consecución de los ODS 2030, evidenciando la potencialidad de las geotecnologías e identificando los objetivos y las metas a los que colabora la actividad de la comunidad TIG para transformar el contexto económico, social y ambiental hacia un futuro más sostenible en todas las escalas, a nivel global, regional y local. Las TIG ofrecen herramientas de representación, análisis, integración, comprensión, proyección y modelado de la realidad espacial o geográfica. Las TIG, al igual que todas las partes interesadas, están llamadas a contribuir a la consecución de la nueva Agenda y a colaborar en el proceso de seguimiento de los progresos conseguidos en el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) y las metas, aportando información y sistematizando indicadores transversales para su evaluación. La publicación incluye las contribuciones científicas presentadas en el Congreso, celebrado en Zaragoza entre los días 12 y 14 de septiembre de 2022.
