Assessing and Qualifying Neighborhood Walkability for Older Adults: Construction and Initial Testing of a Multivariate Spatial Accessibility Model

Abstract: Population aging and urban development pose major challenges for societies today. Joining the literature assessing urban accessibility, the present exploratory research developed a multivariate accessibility model based on four independent variables—related to formal and structural urban space—that influence walkability for older adults (pedestrian network; facilities and shops; public benches; and slopes and gradients). The model used ArcGIS software. For the accessibility calculations, we selected two suburb… Show more

“…Talking while walking and simultaneously navigating the urban environment can be challenging for people with balance disorders and visual or mobility impairments [83] without adding adverse weather conditions. However, we are aware that weather and seasonal conditions influence the walking movements of older adults [84][85][86], so if additional measures are taken when conducting WAIs, rich information could be obtained to understand the influence of weather/temperature on the relationship of the older adults and their environment. In addition to the weather, the time of day at which the WAI was conducted also has an influence since the frequency of social activity may vary depending on the place where the interview is conducted [11].…”

“…Consequently, it could be concluded that there was an interaction between environmental factors and individual behaviors. Not all elements of the built environment could have an independent impact on older adults’s PAB though ( Amaya et al, 2022 ). This might be explained by the fact that the complexity of the influencing factors and the uncertainty of their interactions are hidden.…”

“…Accessibility also has an important impact on the spatial behavior of older adults. For example, Amaya Valkiria et al reported that an accessible community is conducive to the physical health of the residents [9]. Wang Siqiang et al found that the accessibility to and the quality of open space more strongly impact the visiting behavior of older adults, the latter of which was more important [10].…”
