Assessing ISO/IEC29110 by means of ITMark: results from an experience factory

Abstract: ISO/IEC 29110 is intended to help very small entities in improving their software processes. However, this standard is not the only initiative devoted to help organizations in these matters. For instance, ITMark is an established method with an important background in terms of number and diversity of assessments. The aim of this paper is to present a method to assess ISO/IEC 29110 by means of the evaluation performed under the ITMark certification schema built upon an experience factory. To do so, in this pape… Show more

“…Several authors have addressed the challenges that represent the implementation of software process improvements in VSEs 4,5,22–24 because of their specific characteristics. Even if the ISO/IEC 29110 series has been developed to meet the needs of VSEs, the ISO/IEC 29110 does not impose or provide an implementation approach.…”

“…Software standards and models, aimed at the software industry, were developed to contribute to the development of quality products within budget and schedule, by optimizing efforts and resources 23 . However, the implementation of best practices of these models and standards in software development organizations, especially in VSEs, which must work harder to survive, and spend time and effort in improving their operation and processes, is a real challenge 4,5,22,23 …”

“…For VSEs, the quality of their software products is a key factor for its competitive advantage . However, the results from the study performed by Larrucea et al reveal that one of the areas where organizations that uses ISO/IEC29110 have problems most of the time are related to software quality assurance, along with change request, software configuration, and verification and validation activities.…”

“…ISO/IEC 12207) and maturity models such as the Capability Maturity Model Integration CMMI) [18]. Recent initiatives, such as ISO/IEC 29110, show similar challenges [21,24], but industrial experience demonstrate that small enterprise are currently not too far from satisfying those practices [25]. Taking these drawbacks into account and due to the apparent absence of any established framework for integrating human factors and lifecycle development process in small software companies, this paper presents Samay framework for improving ways of work on a daily basis in small software companies.…”
