Assessing Physical Activity and its Relationship to Cardiovascular Risk Factors: NHANES 2003-2006

Abstract: BackgroundLevels of physical activity (PA) in the general population are difficult to characterize. Historically measurement has been based on self-report, which can be subject to bias. PA monitor use has created opportunities to improve surveillance and analytic research on activity and health. The aims of the current study were to investigate the associations between objectively measured PA and cardiovascular disease risk factors and obesity.MethodsData on PA from accelerometers, demographics, blood pressure… Show more

“…27 These results contrast with our study, in which subjective sleepiness was not associated with spontaneous physical activity. As questionnaires are known to be subject to widely varying bias, 51 our study has the advantage of providing objectively measured spontaneous physical activity in individuals with OSA.…”

“…Whilst the mechanisms of this pathway are unclear and may constitute both physiological and psychological factors [65,66], evidence that adiposity is a causal risk factor for low physical activity is important, since it has been recommended that children spend at least 60 min in moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity each day in order to maintain their physical health [67][68][69][70][71][72][73]. In particular, this evidence highlights the importance of developing programmes targeting body weight in order to increase physical activity levels in overweight children [74].…”

“…Um número crescente de estudos tem considerado a prática da atividade física como um importante fator na diminuição de riscos e mortes por doenças cardiovasculares [14][15][16][17][18] . A atividade física consiste em parte integrante no tratamento do paciente acometido por doenças coroná-rias, também desempenha um importante papel em sua prevenção 19 .…”
