Assessing Risk Markers in Intimate Partner Femicide and Severe Violence

Abstract: The aim of this study is to develop a scale to predict intimate partner femicide and severe violence. The sample consists of 1,081 batterer men who were reported to the police station. First, the most significant differences between the severe violence group (n = 269) and the less severe violence group (n = 812) in sociodemographic variables are determined. Both aggressors and victims of the severe violence group have a higher rate of immigration. Second, the proposed 20-item scale is derived from a larger 58-… Show more

“…Some studies estimate that such violence in Spain affects 20-25% of women (Fontanil, Ezama, Fernández, Gil, Herrero & Paz, 2005;Labrador, Rincón, De Luis & Fernández, 2004), while others point to percentages of between 3.6-9.6% of women aged over 18 (Echeburúa, Fernández-Montalvo, Corral & López-Goñi, 2009). It is not surprising then, that some qualify this reality as a public health problem (Caetano, Vaeth & Ramisetty-Milker, 2008;Sharps & Campbell, 1999) whose magnitude is as great as the repercussions of the aggression itself.…”

“…Another important predictor of increased risk of homicides involving intimate partners is sexual violence victimisation [14]. To clarify, the role of sexual violence in intimate relationships requires specific attention as it is not only almost exclusively perpetrated by men, but the violence has been found to be purposefully used to exercise power and dominate the victimised woman [15]. In this regard it is important to note that physical and sexual violence along with no-physical forms of MP-IPV (e.g.…”
