Assessing Student Learning in a Rapidly Changing Environment: Laboratories and Exams

Abstract: The purpose of this communication is to describe and document the challenges of delivering a general chemistry laboratory experience to students and of moving toward multiple small assessments and away from high-stakes examinations. By leveraging of activities that were already in place prior to the pivot to online learning, namely, an electronic laboratory notebook through bluedoorlabs and assessments that emphasized student reasoning, these challenges were addressed. Herein our approach to providing a meanin… Show more

“…Some chose to replace high stakes assessments with other assignments. 13 Others maintained the structure and logistical details for exams, quizzes, and homework assignments that were shifted online, but added security measures such as stringent availability windows 14 or modified the question format. 15 describing testing in the spring 2020 include accounts of what happened when recommended best practices, such as administering questions from a test bank, 16 were hastily implemented.…”

“…In addition to learning, the evaluation process is also of course carried out online. The evaluation process must be able to measure the ability of students to master the concepts taught, one of which is the subject of alkanes in organic chemistry courses Harwood, Meyer, and Towns (2020). A test instrument will be able to properly measure student abilities, if the test is declared empirically feasible Winarti and Mubarak (2019).…”
