According to career literature, greater parental support seems to be associated with higher levels of career exploration. This relationship may be mediated by self-regulatory processes, such as social–emotional skills, as curiosity. However, despite the large number of empirical studies that analyze the antecedents of career exploration, there are no references, to our knowledge, to the role of socio-emotional skills. Following this gap, the present study aims to examine the extent to which perceived parental support is associated with career exploration through the mediating effect of curiosity (socio-emotional skill), among a group of 8th and 9th grade students from public schools in southern Portugal (N = 540). An integrated model was conducted using AMOS 20.0 and the results revealed that curiosity is a partial mediator of the relationship between perceived parental support and career exploration. These results highlight the importance of considering socio-emotional skills (such as curiosity) when designing interventions to foster adaptive career behaviors. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed to open the opportunity to progressively extend the participation of proximal contexts (e.g., families) to career and socio-emotional skills development processes.

Das gegenwärtig starke Interesse an Augmented Reality (AR) und Virtual Reality (VR) bzw. Extended Reality (XR) auch Mixed Reality (MR) genannt – einer Mischform der AR- und VR-Umgebung – stellt eine Chance dar, sich mit den aktuellen didaktischen und pädagogischen Herausforderungen des schulischen und ausserschulischen Lernens auseinanderzusetzen. Während die kognitiven Kompetenzen in Lernprozessen in multimedialer XR-Umgebung oft berücksichtigt werden, werden die emotionalen und sozialen Kompetenzen selten bedacht. Sowohl die gegenwärtigen Medienkunstprojekte als auch positive (SEL) und transformative Lerntheorien (Illeris) können neue Impulse für XR-Bildungsprojekte geben, die eben emotionale und soziale Kompetenzen einbeziehen und fördern. Nicht die Technologie oder die Endgeräte sollten über die Qualität der XR-Bildungsprojekte entscheiden, sondern die Inhalte, mit denen sie sich insbesondere gut fördern lassen, eine positive Lernatmosphäre, zu der sie beitragen und die Persönlichkeitsförderung, die sie unterstützen können.

Higher education in health study programs is particularly focused on the development of technical skills, despite there being a consensus on the importance of training students regarding socioemotional and life skills. The aim of this study was to characterize and explore correlations between socioemotional skills and decision-making styles in undergraduate health students. Undergraduate students (18–25 years old) were recruited at a School of Health Sciences in Portugal. Participants were characterized in terms of sociodemographic data, socioemotional skills (Study on Social and Emotional Skills questionnaire) and decision-making styles (Melbourne Decision Making questionnaire). Descriptive statistics and correlations between questionnaires´ subscales were calculated. Students presented higher scores in tolerance (34.8±3.4), cooperation (34.7±2.4), empathy (31.1±3.2), vigilance (16.0±1.9), and procrastination (9.9±2.1). Assertiveness presented negative correlations with buck-passing (rho=-0.43, p<0.01) and procrastination (rho=-0.38, p<0.01) and positive correlation with vigilance (rho=0.22, p=0.03). Students demonstrated higher values in empathy, cooperation, and tolerance skills, meaning they tend to be kind and care for others’ well-being. Vigilance style is related to assertiveness characterizing hard working leaders able to pay attention to others’ needs. Training that involves socioemotional skills might be crucial for the style of decision-making in future health professionals.
