Assessing telemetry and remote control systems for water users associations in Spain

Abstract: A decades-long policy for irrigation Telemetry and Remote Control (TM/RC) systems in Spain has led to installations for approximately 260 Water Users Associations (WUAs), with a total estimated area of 1.0 M ha of agricultural land. This is believed to be the largest deployment of such technologies in the world. These systems have been installed in financial cooperation between public administrations and WUAs. This paper set out to characterize these systems, assess the causes for their individual success or f… Show more

“…The first step was to establish irrigation systems from full soil cover irrigation (flood, furrow) to pressurized systems with the development of hydraulic control valves [1]. Drip irrigation has emerged as one of the most important innovations in agriculture since the 1960s because it allows the optimal use of both water and fertilizers [2,3].…”

“…Once the positive results have been achieved, the system is ready to be used in the next phase of development, which is the real main motivation of this work: Apply this system to the monitoring of small holm oaks in the reforestation of the pastures of southern Spain, which is one of the reasons why there is some involvement from both the scientific community and the public administration. There are more current studies [9] that justify the use of technological applications for the control of climatic conditions and the control of available water, such as the one we have developed in this paper.…”

“…Although pressure can be manually measured at the hydrants (for instance with a portable measurement device), telemetry and remote control (TM/RC) systems provide automatic and continuous data that can be used for zebra mussel detection. TM/RC systems are commonly installed in collective pressurized irrigation networks in Spain (Playán et al 2018).…”

“…This will facilitate the generalization of the control software. Playán et al (2018) documented the difficulty of communicating between TM/RC systems and other management software used at the WUAs. The generalization of a standard for the communications of these systems would facilitate the control of zebra mussels in collective pressurized irrigation networks.…”
