Assessing the impact of the funding environment on researchers’ risk aversion: the use of citation statistics

Abstract: The funding environment has a profound impact on researchers' behavior. In particular, it influences their freedom and readiness to conduct research ventures with highly uncertain outcomes. In this conceptual paper, we propose a concise new methodology to evaluate researchers' risk aversion based on citation statistics. The derived singlenumber criterion P R is sensitive to the ratio of high impact versus average impact work, based on citation counts. We demonstrate the usefulness of P R on a micro and meso le… Show more

“…These two policy measures generate risk aversion among researchers (Zoller et al, 2014), who will only try to publish in high-impact journals, selecting low risk goals for their projects that will finally lead to poorly cited papers, or in other words, with a very low probability of creating fundamental new knowledge. The current results confirm this prediction; Fig.…”

“…Notwithstanding the important contribution of this strand of the literature to enhancing our understanding of academic practice, it is only recently that researchers have begun to acknowledge the role of risk in academic staff behaviour (Zoller, Zimmerling, and Boutellier 2014). This paucity of evidence is startling in light of extant decision-making theories, which postulate that individuals assess the probability and value of alternative outcomes before choosing how to behave (March and Shapira 1992).…”

“…6 This socialization instills in individuals a habitus that structures their practices and the meanings they associate with their practices (Wacquant, 1990), thereby defining not only how individuals conduct research and produce knowledge but also their competencies and identities (Alvesson & Sandberg, 2014) . 7 As a result, being socialized into certain kinds of research creates a “comfort zone” for graduate students (Pratt & Bonaccio, 2016, p. 708) and shapes their long-term research and career trajectories (Zoller et al, 2014).…”
