Assessing the impacts of the spring sensible heat flux over the Tibetan Plateau on Asian summer monsoon rainfall using observational and reanalysis data

Abstract: The influence of the spring sensible heat flux (SHF) over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the Asian summer monsoon rainfall (ASMR) has been widely investigated. Previous efforts have mainly used the SHF at meteorological stations located over the central and eastern TP. The relationship between the SHF over the entire TP and the ASMR over a time period of two decades is poorly known. Based on observational and reanalysis datasets, we analysed the impact of SHF anomalies on the ASMR from 1984 to 2007. Lag correlati… Show more

“…4 ). The albedo-induced enhancement of SAH could shift the lower-layer WPSH northwestward 30 through the propagation of a Rossby wave train 31 , 32 . Specifically, when Rossby waves triggered by the intensification of SAH propagate eastward along the westerly jet, a quasi-barotropic and stationary upper-tropospheric ridge over the coast of China is formed, which further pulls both the SAH and the WPSH, and thus leads to the northwestward (eastward) movement of WPSH (SAH) 33 35 .…”

“…In addition, comparing the monthly variation of the standard deviation of the SH, it can be seen that the standard deviation of the SH is relatively larger in May (Qian et al, 2004). Therefore, in some studies, the SH in May was used to characterize the intensity of the spring heat source over the TP (Zhao and Chen, 2001b;Duan et al, 2017;Zhan et al, 2020;Duan et al, 2022).…”
