Assessment of anatomical knowledge by practical examinations: The effect of question design on student performance

Abstract: The Objective Structural Practical Examination (OSPE) is a timed examination that assesses topographical and/or applied knowledge of anatomy with the use of cadaveric resources and medical images. This study investigated whether elements of question design (provision of clinical context, type of visual resources used, gender context and difficulty) of an anatomy question affected students' performance and also whether there was any effect of basic demography or participation in various voluntary activities.Stu… Show more

“…OSPEs are a popular form of anatomy assessment (Sagoo et al, ); their aim is to assess higher cognitive and psychomotor skills (Yaqinudin et al, 2013). A description of what an OSPE should entail is provided by Yaqinuddin et al (), and some adhere to this (Chakravarty et al, ; Raubenheimer et al, ; Sagoo et al, 2015) while others do not (Schoeman and Chandratilake, 2013).…”

“…In another context, a higher score in MCQs for the distinction student may be explained by the fact that MCQs provides context to the question being asked, which should, therefore, make it easier for the students to recall information [20,21]. The MCQs applied higher order thinking and considering that many examiners aimed at good knowledge acquired as well as the skill of producing competent graduates and validity and reliability of MCQs are generally considered high [22,23].…”

“…Some observation and judgment on students' performance may contain subjective bias, but the decision was based on the response of a majority of students, i.e. score 1 or 0 will be given to the group only when over half of students within that group respond positively or negatively [8]. Table 1.…”
