Assessment of Carbon Dioxide Reduction Efficiency Using the Regional Carbon Neutral Model—A Case Study in University Campus, Taiwan

Abstract: A regional carbon neutral model was built to assess the balance of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) absorption by plants and emission by power usage in Tajen University, in the south of Taiwan, in order to test a carbon neutral model on a small-scale carbon neutral effect and its correlation to a large-scale forest carbon neutral effect. The number of plants was measured to estimate the CO 2 fixation volume on the Tajen University campus. The results showed that the total CO 2 absorption volume by plants was 34,800 tons… Show more

“…In recent years, human activities have contributed to significant climate change around the globe. As a result, countries worldwide are focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change [20]. The undertaking of critical research on combating this problem through carbon reduction and promotion of sustainable strategies stems from higher education institutions, which play a significant role through their research, teaching and implementation of strategies and policies to address these concerns.…”

“…According to [30], this implies that to compensate for the effect wearable healthcare devices in 2022, we need about 11.34 million conifer trees. If we were to absorb the produce CO 2 with plain field grass only, we would need an area equivalent to Morocco or Iraq.…”

“…The Indian HEIs can plan to employ 4 broad strategies to achieve carbon neutrality, with 12 related goals as suggested by American University (2010) Besides the above strategies, carbon sequestration/carbon offsets by indigenous multipurpose plant communities can be used as an effective long-term strategy for working towards a carbon neutral campus as has been indicated by several workers (e.g., American University 2010; Chung and Chung 2011;Ellis et al undated).…”
