Denture base fracture is one of the most annoying problems for both prosthodontists and patients. Denture repair is considered to be an appropriate solution rather than fabricating a new denture. Digital denture fabrication is widely spreading nowadays. However, the repair strength of CAD-CAM milled and 3D-printed resins is lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of surface treatment on the shear bond strength (SBS) of conventionally and digitally fabricated denture base resins. One l heat-polymerized (Major base20), two milled (IvoCad, AvaDent), and three 3D-printed (ASIGA, NextDent, FormLabs) denture base resins were used to fabricate 10 × 10 × 3.3 acrylic specimens (N = 180, 30/resin, n = 10). Specimens were divided into three groups according to surface treatment; no treatment (control), monomer application (MMA), or sandblasting (SB) surface treatments were performed. Repair resin was bonded to the resin surface followed by thermocycling (5000 cycles). SBS was tested using a universal testing machine where a load was applied at the resin interface (0.5 mm/min). Data were collected and analyzed using ANOVA and a post hoc Tukey test (α = 0.05). SEM was used for failure type and topography of fractured surfaces analysis. The heat-polymerized and CAD-CAM milled groups showed close SBS values without significance (p > 0.05), while the 3D-printed resin groups showed a significant decrease in SBS (p < 0.0001). SBS increased significantly with monomer application (p < 0.0001) except for the ASIGA and NextDent groups, which showed no significant difference compared to the control groups (p > 0.05). All materials with SB surface treatment showed a significant increase in SBS when compared with the controls and MMA application (p < 0.0001). Adhesive failure type was observed in the control groups, which dramatically changed to cohesive or mixed in groups with surface treatment. The SBS of 3D-printed resin was decreased when compared with the conventional and CAD-CAM milled resin. Regardless of the material type, SB and MMA applications increased the SBS of the repaired resin and SB showed high performance.

Background Poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a type of polymer mostly used to make denture bases. Self-cured acrylic resin (PMMA) can be used to repair a fractured acrylic denture base; however, even after repair, this area remains vulnerable. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) could be used as a filler for polymer reinforcement. Furthermore, silver nanoparticles are efficient agents for the prevention of dental biofilm and improving their mechanical properties. The doping of CNTs with silver nanoparticles may lead to a synergistic interaction that is predicted to enhance the mechanical characteristics of the fillers. Objectives The aim of the study was to assess the influnce of manual incorporation of 0.5% weight percent (%wt.) of silver doped carbon nanotubes (Ag-doped CNTs) into commercial self-cured PMMA on its flexural strength, impact strength, and surface microhardness. Methods In this investigation, a total of 60 specimens comprised of acrylic resin were employed. They are divided into two main groups: (a) the control group, which was made by using liquid monomer and commercial self-cured PMMA powder; and (b) the modified group, prepared by hand mixing the purchased silver-doped CNTs powder (0.5% wt.) to self-cured PMMA powder (99.5%wt.), and then the blended powder was incorporated into the liquid monomer. Flexural strength, flexural modulus, impact strength, and surface microhardness were evaluated. Independent sample t-tests were used to statistically analyze the data and compare the mean values of flexural strength, flexural modulus, impact strength, and surface microhardness (p-value ≤ 0.05). Results The flexural strength of the modified groups with Ag-doped CNTs (132.4 MPa) was significantly greater than that of the unmodified (control) groups (63.2 MPa). Moreover, the flexural modulus of the modified groups with Ag-doped CNTs (3.067 GPa) was significantly greater than that of the control groups (1.47 GPa). Furthermore, the impact strength of the modified groups with Ag-doped CNTs (11.2 kJ/mm2) was significantly greater than that of the control groups (2.3 kJ/mm2). Furthermore, the microhardness of the modified groups with Ag-doped CNTs (29.7 VHN) was significantly greater than that of the control groups (16.4 VHN), (p-value = 0.0001). Conclusion The incorporation of 0.5% wt. silver doped CNTs fillers to the self-cured acrylic resin enhanced its flexural strength, flexural modulus, impact strength, and surface microhardness.

Algorithm for Designing a Removable Complete Denture (RCD) Based on the FEM Analysis of Its Service Life

(1) Background: The paper addresses the computer simulation and prediction of the service life of the base of removable complete dentures (RCDs) under typical loads caused by biting and chewing food. For this purpose, the finite element method (FEM) was used. It is assumed that various blocks of teeth, such as incisors, canines, premolars and molars, are subjected to cyclic impacts during a human life. (2) Methods: Both symmetric and asymmetric mastication (two- and one-sided loads, respectively) cases were considered. The load level was assumed to be 100 N, which corresponds to the average muscular compression force of typical human jaws. (3) Results: The FEM analysis of the stress–strain state evolution for RCDs under cyclic loads was carried out. Maps of equivalent lines were drawn for the denture base in terms of its durability. A multi-axial criterion was implemented to determine the number of cycles prior to failure by the mechanism of a normal opening mode crack. The FEM-based assessment of the service life of RCDs enabled us to establish the critical stress concentration areas, thereby allowing for further planning for the correction of an occlusal scheme or teeth inclinations. As a result, the service life of RCDs under cyclic loading can be improved. (4) Conclusions: An algorithm for designing RCDs in the case of edentulism based on the FEM simulation using commercial software as part of the procedure is proposed.
