Assessment of cheiloscopy in sex determination using lysochrome - A preliminary study

Abstract: Introduction:The present study was undertaken with the objective of ascertaining whether latent lip prints generated by persistent lipsticks and developed using lysochrome dyes have the potential of use in sex determination and personal identification.Materials and Methods:This study included a total of 100 subjects (50 males and 50 females) whose latent lip prints were obtained by applying the persistent lipstick Revlon ColorStay Overtime® manufactured by Revlon® consumer products corporation, NewYork, USA, a… Show more

“…We used the classification by Suzuki and Tsuchihashi because it is the most commonly used classification system in the literature (7,12,14,23) and it is easy to use and interpret (24). Lip prints are used in association with critical issues such as human identification and criminal investigations.…”

“…This pattern was not seen at all in the upper lip of females. In the recent years, some authors have claimed differences in lip print patterns of males and females (7,23). For example, Costa and Caldas (18) studied a group of the Portuguese population and reported type III to be the most dominant pattern in males (52%) and type II to be the predominant one in females (44%).…”

“…proved that lysochrome dyes could be used in the development of latent lip prints and could be applied in sex determination with an individual at its accuracy. [ 16 ] With regard to the study method, physically recording lip prints is still a labor-intensive and technique-sensitive process. Prabhu et al .…”

“…Nevertheless, the brushing technique could destroy a print. Therefore, lysochrome powder was applied using fine dusting brushes specifically designed for forensic examinations, so as not to smudge the print or to allow “clumping” of the powder in specific areas 14–16 . Thus, soaking the vaseline‐treated lip print in roselle extract was used as the staining method instead of the brushing technique so as to avoid interference with the lip print.…”
