Assessment of Compressive Sensing 2 × 2 MIMO Antenna Design for Millimeter-Wave Radar Image Enhancement

Abstract: This paper presents a microstrip array antenna designed for a 2 × 2 Compressive Sensing Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (CS-MIMO) millimeter-wave radar operating at 37.5 GHz. The CS-MIMO linear array antenna is designed to obtain an optimal aperture by seeking a suitable random pattern for the antenna positions. Applying CS allows a considerable reduction in the number of antennas respect to a dense array based on the Nyquist criterion. In this study, we report all possible configurations of 2 × 2 CS-MIMO by pl… Show more

“…To reconstruct a three-dimensional (3D) image of a scene/target, a 2D aperture must be synthesized. This usually requires a very large number of antenna elements to satisfy the Nyquist criterion [4]. The use of sparse aperiodic phased arrays [5,6] and multistatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) arrays [7,8] are two solutions provided for this issue.…”

“…The indoor human localization and life activity monitoring is proposed in [7]. mmWave radars are explored in several UAV applications [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. However, radars for UAV ground station monitoring and control application is still challenging, as it needs to localize and be able to track the small dynamic UAVs in a wide field of view (theoretically 360 degrees field of view).…”

“…The number of receiving antennas, on the other hand, has a large impact on the accuracy and resolution of the targets' AoA. The combination of compressive sensing and multiple input and multiple out (MIMO) was shown to improve the angular resolution [12]. The greater the number of receiving antennas, the better the performance.…”
