Abstract: This report presents a summary of a meeting on assessment of course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs), including an operational definition of a CURE, a summary of research on CUREs, relevant findings from studies of undergraduate research internships, and recommendations for future research on and evaluation of CUREs.

“…If developed and implemented effectively, an ALURE can provide the benefits of one-on-one research internships through normal coursework activities for hundreds of students, many of who would otherwise not engage in undergraduate research 27 . The real-world nature of research is a key motivator for student engagement in ALUREs, and in many cases their learning outcomes have directly contributed to research publications 13,28,29 .…”

“…Effective scaffolding of the learning activity is also essential, as the research question needs to be investigated using laboratory techniques that are cost-effective, scalable for large classes, and subject to iteration and optimisation through student-driven inquiry 27 .…”

“…During the semester, you may be able to design special projects for students in laboratory courses that help advance your research. Coursebased undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are known to improve student learning outcomes and keep PUI faculty research projects moving forward during the academic year [14,15].…”

“…That limitation is magnified in smaller institutions of higher education, where the number of research programs is limited and the student has even less research options to choose from. Working on a research program led by a faculty also diminishes the aspect of ownership of the research, which is an important element of the undergraduate research experience [29,2]. Another disadvantage of the student research assistantship model is that the student often performs specific tasks defined by the primary investigator or other supervisors, and therefore does not earn hands-on experience in performing the entire research process, from the definition of the research problem to the analysis of the experimental results.…”
