Resistance of polypropylene-wood composites to fungi Summary-In the present study, the composites of polypropylene and wood were prepared. The experimental material comprised two most common Polish timber species pine wood (Pinus sylvestris L.) as a softwood species and oak wood (Quercus sp.) as a hardwood species. The size of wood sawdust ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 mm. Two types of lignocellulosic materials were used in the experiments described: wood without any previous chemical treatment and wood after its mercerization (i.e. activated with NaOH). In addition the polypropylene-wood composite containing a block copolymer, i.e. styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) was also obtained. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of different kinds of polypropylene-wood composites to fungal decay. Weight losses and temporary tensile strength of composite samples after the mycological test were determined.

COMPOSITES BASED ON POLYPROPYLENE RECYCLATES AND NATURAL FIBERS Summary-The processing by reactive extrusion method of composites based on virgin polypropylene and its recyclates filled with fibers of jute, sisal, hemp or cottonized flax has been presented (Tables 1 and 2). The influence of the addition of three different compatibilizers and fiber alkalization on the properties of the obtained materials was evaluated. The basic mechanical and process properties (Tables 3, 4, Figs. 2-13) as well as water absorption (Fig. 1) were determined and the influence of cyclic loading on them estimated. The potentials and applicability of these composites were also presented.

The resistance of wood fibers-poly(vinyl chloride) composites to UV-irradiation

Wood fibers-poly(vinyl chloride) (WF-PVC) composite and pure poly(vinyl chloride) samples, prepared by extrusion, were exposed to short wavelength UV-irradiation (λ = 253.7 nm). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs shows heterogeneity of WF-PVC composite but the effect of UV-irradiation on surface morphology of sample is negligible. The course of photochemical reactions occurring in samples studied has been monitored by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. The results obtained indicate the better photochemical stability of WF-PVC comparing to virgin PVC.
