Assessment of Gene Flow to Wild Relatives and Nutritional Composition of Sugarcane in Brazil

Abstract: The minimum and maximum values obtained were, in percent: moisture (62.6-82.5); sucrose (9.65-21.76); crude fiber (8.06-21.03); FDN (7.20-20.68); FDA (4.55-16.90); lipids (0.06-1.59); ash (0.08-2.67); and crude protein (0.18-1.18). Besides a considerable amount of genetic variation and plastic responses, many instances of genotype-by-environment interaction were detected.

“…Thus, they are not widely utilized in some public breeding institutes even though they are more efficient on a per-dollar basis [64][65][66][67]. Moreover, before a cultivar is released, it needs to be tested in diverse growth environments, since genetic-by-environment interactions can substantially alter a crop's phenotype and potentially the nutritional components of the cultivar [62,68,69]. Therefore, due to genetic-by-environment interactions, a biofortified crop may lose its enhanced nutritional trait [68].…”

“…The requirements for crop-wild gene flow to occur are of five types (Bressan et al, 2020): (1) phylogenetic: at least one close wild relative must exist; (2) geographic: the wild and the crop species should be sympatric; (3) temporal: there should be flowering synchrony; (4) physiological/genetic: both the crop and the wild species must be sexual, fertile and compatible; (5) ecological: effective, if occasional, interspecific pollination should be spontaneous. Crop-to-wild gene transfer may flood the wild populations, even driving them to extinction, or making them weedy, while wild-to-crop gene transfer may also produce weeds or jeopardize the purity of a cultivar (Ellstrand and Rieseberg, 2016).…”
