Assessment of Genetic Diversity and Population Structure in Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Germplasm based on Morphological Traits and SSR Markers

Abstract: Background: The study was undertaken to assess the genetic diversity and genetic structure among fifty-five pea accessions using morphological traits and SSR markers. Methods: A total of 55 pea accessions were analyzed using eleven phenotypic traits and twenty SSR markers. The data obtained by morphological and molecular profiling was used for the analysis of genetic diversity and for the estimation of genetic diversity estimates, correlation, principal components analysis and population structure. Result: Thi… Show more

“…Various molecular markers have been used to evaluate DNA polymorphism in peas; it depends on the relationship between the collections and the type of cultivar. Among these, the markers most often used by the researchers are the SSRs [15,37], but also SRAP [13] and ISSR [22] were employed because of their presumed reliability greater than RAPD and their ease of use greater than AFLP. In this investigation, we focus on the use of ISSR markers, due to their ability applied to the identification of genetic material of the…”

“…Loridon et al (2005) initially developed a set of SSRs for genetic diversity and linkage mapping of a pea. Later, Ram et al (2021) and Singh et al (2021b) reported using some polymorphic SSR markers for genetic diversity studies in peas.…”

“…Since many morphological characters are affected by environmental factors, the analysis of genetic diversity among local pea populations in this study was performed on molecular markers [ 11 ]. Molecular markers are useful for complementing morphological traits as they are independent of environmental influences and allow variety identification in the early stages of the crop [ 12 ]. The study of genetic diversity has received much attention in the last two decades for an effective breeding program and germplasm management, especially after the development of the concept of seed collection [ 13 ].…”
