The present study reports the content of 14 heavy metals (Al, Fe, Ti, Ag, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in twenty-two (n = 22) lipstick products of imported and locally manufactured at the local market in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia using Inductivity Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). The overall average contents of Al, Fe, Ti, Ag, As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 3131.18 ± 0.09, 9642.92 ± 0.079, 46.59 ± 0.109, 0.545 ± 0.009, 2.041 ± 0.024, 1371.439 ± 0.085, 0.134 ± 0.008, 4.242 ± 0.02, ND, 3.934 ± 0.03, 19.712 ± 0.012, 20.196 ± 0.056, 0.725 ± 0.012, and 858.666 ± 0.083 μg/g, respectively. The correction coefficient of the results is up to 0.9995, showing an excellent linear relationship between metal concentrations in samples. The results also revealed that, the total concentrations of toxic metals in various samples ranged from 1201.35 -60,800.36 μg/g. The dark-colored lipstick samples 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 7B, B8, 9B, and 10B revealed high content of total toxic metals compared to the light-colored lipstick samples 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 4C, 5A, 7A, 8A, 9A, and 10A. The concentrations of Al, Fe, Ba, and Zn in the samples within each class under investigation are relatively high whereas the concentrations of Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cu, and Pb are lowest; and Ti, Mn, and Ni contents were below 100 μg/g. Chromium was not detected in any sample. Since no safe limits for most of these metals relating to cosmetic products are available in Saudi Arabia, it is hard to ascertain whether the values obtained in this study are relatively high or low. Prolonged use of products containing these elements may pose a threat to human health and could damage the environment.

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Chrysophthalmum montanum (DC.) Boiss.'un in vitro sitotoksik, fitotoksik ve insektisidal aktivitelerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntemler: C. montanum'un toprak üstü kısmının %80 metanollü ham ekstresi n-hekzan, kloroform, n-butanol ve kalan sulu fraksiyonları elde etmek üzere ardarda fraksiyonlanmıştır. Bitkinin ham ekstre ve fraksiyonları tuzlu su karidesi letalite testinde sitotoksisitesi, Lemna minor L.'e karşı fitotoksisitesi ve Rhyzopertha dominica ile Tribolium castaneum'a karşı insektisidal aktivitesi gibi biyolojik tarama çalışmalarında biyolojik aktiviteleri bakımından incelenmiştir. Bulgular: Sitotoksisite testinde ham ekstre, n-hekzan ve kloroform fraksiyonları sırasıyla 71.51, 126.62 ve 75.95 µg/mL LD 50 değerleri ile belirgin letaliteye sahip bulunmuştur. Kalan su fraksiyonu hariç, ekstre ve fraksiyonların % büyüme inhibisyonu ile ölçülen fitotoksik aktivitesi konsantrasyona bağlı olarak gözlenmiştir. Özellikle n-hekzan ve kloroform fraksiyonları, 1000 µg/mL'de %100 büyüme inhibisyonuna sahip bulunmuş ve takiben n-butanol ve ham ekstre aynı dozda sırasıyla %62.6 ve %40.0 büyümeyi inhibe edici etkiye sahip bulunmuştur. Buna karşın, tüm örnekler R. dominica ve T. castaneum'a karşı insektisidal aktivite göstermemiştir. Sonuç: Bu çalışma C. montanum'un sitotoksik ve fitotoksik biyolojik aktivite potansiyeline sahip biyoaktif bileşikler içerdiğini göstermiştir. Boiss. Materials and Methods:The crude methanol (80%) extract of the aerial parts of C. montanum was fractionated to obtain n-hexane, chloroform, n-butanol, and remaining water fractions. The crude extract and subsequent solvent fractions of the plant were evaluated for their biological activities using screening bioassays such as cytotoxicity on brine shrimp lethality, phytotoxicity against Lemna minor L., and insecticidal activity against Rhyzopertha dominica and Tribolium castaneum. Results: The cytotoxicity assay revealed that the crude extract, n-hexane, and chloroform fractions of the plant had positive lethality with LD 50 values of 71.51, 126.62, and 75.95 µg/mL, respectively. The extract and its fractions, except for the remaining water fraction, showed phytotoxic activity, which was expressed as percentage growth regulation in a concentration-dependent manner. n-hexane and chloroform fractions in particular had 100% growth inhibition (GI) at 1000 µg/mL, followed by the n-butanol fraction (62.6% GI) and crude extract (40.0% GI) of the plant at the same concentration. Otherwise, all samples had no insecticidal activity against R. dominica and T. castaneum. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that C. montanum contains bioactive compounds related to potential biological activities such as cytotoxic and phytotoxic.

Background: Plants and herbs have long been used as remedies without scientific evidences. The objective of the present study was to explore the anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive and antipyretic potential of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Terminalia citrina fruits in mice. Materials and Methods: Extracts of Terminalia citrina fruits were evaluated at doses of 200mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 600mg/kg in albino mice for preventive effect in inflammatory edema, peripheral pain sensation and pyrexia. Carrageenan induced paw edema method was utilized to evaluate anti-inflammatory activity. Analgesic appraisal of extracts was demonstrated using acetic acid induced writhing model of pain. Antipyretic potential was determined by brewer's yeast induced pyrexia model. Statistical analysis was conducted by ANOVA following post hoc test. Results: Both extracts exhibited significant and dose-dependent anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities. The ethanolic extract was more effective in reducing inflammatory edema, pyrexia and pain sensation than aqueous extracts in all tested doses. Conclusion: It can be concluded that fruit extracts of Terminalia citrina may be effective in reducing inflammation, pyrexia and pain sensation in animals.
