Assessment of Heavy Metals Concentration and Enrichment Levels in Soils around Quarries and Barite Mine Sites in Part of Akamkpa and Biase Area, Southeastern Nigeria

Abstract: Geochemical investigation of the soils around quarry and barite mine sites in part of Akamkpa and Biase area of Southeastern Nigeria, was carried out to assess the concentration and enrichment levels of some heavy metals and trace elements in the soils. The investigation involved the collection of fifteen (15) soil samples between the depth of 15 -30 cm. The samples were dried at room temperature, prepared and analyzed for heavy metals using inductively couple plasma mass spectrometer. The result shows that th… Show more

“…Moreover, the assessment of heavy metal concentrations in water sources around quarries and mine sites in Nigeria has revealed the degree of contamination due to mining and quarrying activities in the area, emphasizing the anthropogenic contribution to heavy metal pollution (Okolo et al, OGBEIDE, O;HENRY, B. 2018;Alabi et al, 2019;Ochelebe et al, 2020). This highlights the role of human activities, particularly mining and quarrying, in introducing heavy metals into water sources.…”

“…Heavy metals are natural components of the earth's crust. They are released to the soil during naturally occurring phenomena like weathering and volcanic eruption (Ochelebe et al, 2020) and released during mining activities within the earth's crust (Tehna et al, 2023).…”

“…The developed geodatabase eliminates sources of conflicts in land use or mitigates their impact in areas where metallurgical, mining and chemical production are concentrated. Similarly, in other countries with developed mining and subsequent environmental problems, such as Nigeria (Ochelebe et al, 2020), Morocco (Khalil et al, 2014), China (Qi et al,2017), Indonesia (Maryati et al, 2012), Soth Africa (Orimoloye & Ololade, 2020) Sierra Leone (Kamara, 2020), the use of GIS with combination with modern remote sensing technologies and tools is becoming routine.…”
