Assessment of Inadequate Use of Pediatric Emergency Medical Transport Services: The Pediatric Emergency and Ambulance Critical Evaluation (PEACE) Study

Abstract: Aim: To provide data on the inadequate use of emergency medical transports services (EMTS) in children and underlying contributing factors. Methods: This was a prospective single-center cohort study (01/2017-12/2017) performed at the Saarland University Children's Hospital, Homburg, Germany. “…Emergency medical transports services are often inappropriate, providing pure transportation where no immediate care is actually needed (24). Albeit EMTS involvement was activated more appropriately in March-May 2020 rather than in March-May 2019, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, we observed families misusing the ambulance as mere means of transportation in more than two-thirds of the cases.…”

“…In our study an elevation of pediatric emergency service by ambulance emerges in OPBG COVID center of Palidoro because the suspected patients were transported directly by the regional ambulance service and admitted directly to this center. Indeed, in our ED of Rome there has been a decrease in the number of ambulance arrivals possibly due also to more adequate use of emergency medical transport service, compared to the prepandemic period, in which “a substantial number of emergency medical transport service use is medically not indicated” as previously indicated by many authors [ 30 33 ].…”

Emergency medical transport use for pediatric cases has been reported at around 5%-10% [ 28 , 29 ]. Furthermore, medical interventions on children may require consent from their parents.…”
