Assessment of interleukin‐1β, interleukin‐6, and tumor necrosis factor‐Α levels in the peri‐implant sulcular fluid among waterpipe (narghile) smokers and never‐smokers with peri‐implantitis

“…Numerous studies have investigated the effects of cigarette smoking on peri‐implant health and have reported significantly compromised peri‐implant parameters as compared with non‐smokers (NS) . These results have been confirmed by clinical laboratory investigations and have shown significantly high levels of proinflammatory cytokines in the peri‐implant sulcular fluid (PISF) of cigarette smokers (CS) as compared with NS …”

“…One explanation for this is that habitual use of nicotinic products is associated with an increased expression of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α in the PISF, which if left therapeutically uncontrolled may accelerate osteoclastic activity around implants 4. From a clinical point of view, all nicotinic-product users displayed significantly high peri-implant soft tissue inflammatory parameters (PI and PD) compared with nonsmokers.…”
