Assessment of male serum anti-Mullerian hormone as a marker of spermatogenesis and ICSI outcome

Abstract: Male serum AMH levels are not indicative of spermatogenesis and cannot differentiate between fertile and infertile males. Serum AMH levels were not predictive of ICSI outcome as well.

“…Al-Qahtani et al [32] and Appasamy et al [33] reported that serum AMH concentration in infertile males was significantly lower than that of normal males. However, some studies have reported no statistically significant differences in serum AMH levels between males with oligospermia and those with normal sperm concentrations, or between infertile men and fertile men [34,35] . We explored the correlation between serum levels of sex hormones and kisspeptin, and sperm concentration in infertile and fertile men to determine if the serum kisspeptin level could be used as an indicator of male spermatogenesis.…”

“…On the contrary, according to other authors, serum AMH levels were not indicative of spermatogenesis and could not differentiate between fertile and infertile males (15) and between azoospermic, oligospermic and normospermic men (15,26). It was also reported that serum AMH levels neither predicted the presence of sperm in the testis of azoospermic men (11) nor differentiated between NOA with and without spermatozoa in testicular samples (27, 28).…”

“…Studies on the potential role of AMH in male infertility have also produced conflicting results regarding the value of serum AMH to differentiate between fertile and infertile males (12,(15)(16)26). This controversy is related to the heterogeneity of the studied populations and ranging of sperm concentration from subtle abnormalities to severe oligozoospermia and NOA.…”

“…Secondly, difference in BMI between two groups existed. BMI is inverse related with ovarian reserve, and usually but not always, in patients with PCOS[ 16 19 ]. Therefore, we performed further analysis using ANCOVA to adjust BMI.…”
