Assessment of the chemical components of Famenin groundwater, western Iran

Abstract: The Faminin area in the semi-arid Hamadan state, western Iran is facing a serious deficiency in groundwater resources due to an increasing demand associated with rapid population growth and agricultural development. The chemical composition of 78 well samples throughout the Faminin area was determined with the aim of evaluating the concentration of the background ions and identifying the major hydrogeochemical processes that control the groundwater chemistry. The similarity between rock and groundwater chemist… Show more

“…Thus, water-rock interactions control the hydrochemistry of the recharge waters (Guo and Wang 2005;Jalali 2007b) and thus the chemical composition of groundwaters in coastal plains. To verify this hypothesis the samples classified as group I or II were related to the geological formations bordering the plains (see Fig.…”

“…There are three main mechanisms of inclusion of Cl − ions in water: atmospheric contribution through rain, rock weathering of silicate minerals and rocks, and anthropogenic pollution (SINGH et al, 2004;JALALI, 2007;AL-SHAIBANI, 2008).…”

“…Studies considering the geochemical evolution of surface water in existing reservoirs are important tools for planning and sustainability in semiarid zone (JALALI, 2007), and provide valuable information on the behavior and seasonal, temporal and spatial variability of ionic compounds dissolved in the water within the river basins and sub-basins, as well as its dynamics in rock-soil-water systems.…”

“…The most important economic activity in the area is agriculture, with the chief crops being garlic, potato and wheat. Actual irrigation is lower than the total theoretical demand as there is a considerable water deficit in relation to the amount of land to be irrigated (Jalali 2007). The Kabudar Ahang and Famenin plains are situated in the northern border of SanandajSirjan Zone and northern part of main Zagros thrust belt (Amiri 2005).…”

“…The Famenin and Kabudar Ahang plains in the semi-arid Hamadan state in west Iran are facing a serious deficiency in groundwater resources due to an increasing demand for drinking and agriculture use associated with rapid population growth and agricultural development (Jalali 2007). The occurrence of sinkholes in the Kabudar Ahang and Famenin plains, Hamadan province, was reported for the first time in 1989.…”
