Assessment of the Most Appropriate Measures for Mitigation of Risks in the Agri-Food Supply Chain

Abstract: The present paper embarks on an investigation of the main risks associated with agri-food supply chains. A total of 11 key risks, namely Natural disasters of a global or local scale; Workers’ strikes; Change in government regulations or safety standards; Supply chain disruptions due to social or political unrest; Short term raw materials or products (expiration issue); Seasonality; Food safety incidents; Lack of smooth interconnection with other chain participants and Market and pricing strategies, economic cr… Show more

“…It illustrates the significant impact of environmental conditions on agriculture. Findings from Kuizinaitė, Morkūnas, and Volkov (2023) also affirmed that natural disasters constituted a primary risk, whether on a global or local scale. It is further corroborated by research conducted by Hua, Liu, Tse, and Yu (2023), demonstrating that natural disasters substantially influenced specific agricultural commodities, such as soybeans and wheat.…”

“…This paper is closely related to food safety research from a supply chain perspective. On one hand, previous studies have focused on identifying and assessing food safety risks [ 20 ] and hazards along the supply chain [ 14 ]. For example, Lopez-Galvez et al [ 12 ] examined potential tensions between microbiological safety and environmental sustainability in the supply chain of fresh produce, addressing issues throughout the food supply chain, from primary production to end-of-life, including handling, processing industry, retailers, and consumers.…”

“…Various factors contributing to localized constraints have become topics of discussion, encompassing market dynamics, geographical distances, weak associations with retailers, and consumer behavior impeding producers from attaining a critical mass of clients or penetrating broader markets [36][37][38]. Recent researches [39,40] associate vulnerabilities with weak supply contacts, supplier absence, or reliance on multiple suppliers. However, the myriad of challenges confronting supply chains underscore the necessity for a systematic approach as opposed to a random enumeration that may introduce confusion [41].…”
