“…Plasma sex steroids Many authors have investigated the effects of agricultural pesticides on the hormonal regulation of fish reproduction (Gimeno et al, 1996;Mckinlay et al, 2008;Palma et al, 2009aPalma et al, , 2009bSayed et al, 2012;Da Cuña et al, 2013). In this study, the plasma levels of androgens (T and 11-KT) were generally lower in fish from contaminated sites (especially in fish from S4), whereas the levels of E2 were significantly higher at this site compared with fish from the reference site, regardless of the species, sex or season.…”

“…Although forbidden in Benin since 2007, endosulfan is still the most widely used insecticide in the Beninese cotton basin (Agbohessi et al, 2011). Considered an endocrine disruptor (WWF, 2011;OMS-PNUE, 2013), this insecticide inhibits the testes of male fish followed by morphological changes (e.g., atrophy of the lobules and degeneration of the spermatids and spermatozoa) (Srivastava and Srivastava, 1991;Wester, 1991;Foerson et al, 2001;Mckinlay et al, 2007;Palma et al, 2009aPalma et al, , 2009b. According to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (2009), flubendiamide would also disrupt the endocrine glands and could bioaccumulate in fatty tissues.…”

“…At present, negative effects promoted by pesticides on aquatic ecology were prominent (Rodriguez-Mozaz et al 2004, Bajet et al 2012). Pesticides and their metabolites damaged aquatic organisms either directly or indirectly by food chains, which reduced biological diversity and natural ecosystem balance (Palma et al 2009, Wiszniowski et al2011, Hayasaka et al 2012, Van der Oost et al 2013). So the high-toxic and high--residual pesticides which were traditionally used have been forbidden to produce and applicate in China, certain pesticides such as chlorpyrifos (insecticide), chlorothalonil (fungicide) and trifl uralin (herbicide) have been widely used due to their moderate or low toxicity and low residue instead.…”

“…Pesticide residues in the environment are an important source of water pollution due to extensive use of pesticides in agricultural production (Zhou 2008, Palma et al 2009, Smalling et al 2013). According to statistics, the amounts of pesticides used have reached 50-60 thousand tons annually in China, about 80% of which entered the environment directly (Zhou 2008).…”
