“…DNA in bivalves has been approved as an effective biomarker to assess the genotoxicity of pollutants (Ching et al, 2001). The decrease on DNA damage observed in the present study were similar to those observed in crabs hepatopancreas tissues after exposure to carbamazepine and novobiocin (0.1-10 μg L À 1 ) (Aguirre-Martínez et al, 2013d) and are in line with results reported in digestive glands tissues of R. philippinarum exposed to endosulfan (Tao et al, 2013). Significant decrease of DNA strand breaks have been recorded in H. diversicolor after exposure to environmental concentration of fluoxetine, 17α-ethynylestradiol and propanolol (Maranho et al, 2014).…”

“…Moreover, this response has been recorded in R. philippinarum exposed to different organic compounds, for example, an increase of GST activity was observed in digestive gland tissues of these species when exposed to port sediments (Martín-Díaz et al, 2007), and also to sediment affected by oil spills (Morales-Caselles et al, 2008a. Additionally, an increase has been shown in digestive gland tissues of these species after exposure to organochlorine pesticide endosulfan (Tao et al, 2013). There is evidence on increment of GST activity in several aquatic invertebrates as a consequence of organic contamination, such as those reported for hepatopancreas tissues of C. maenas when exposed to port sediments (Martín-Díaz et al, 2007), and to sediment affected by oil spills (MoralesCaselles et al, 2008a(MoralesCaselles et al, , 2008b; in digestive gland tissues of M. galloprovincialis exposed to sites contaminated with organic compounds (Bebianno et al, 2007); in hepatopancreas tissues of the crustacean Macrobrachium borellii (Lavarías et al, 2011); in the polychaete Arenicola marina (Ramos-Gómez et al, 2011a) and in digestive glands tissues of Mytilus edulis exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (Solé et al, 1996).…”

“…To study the effects of endosulfan on the activity ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), glutathione-Stransferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione content, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and DNA strand break in gills and digestive glands of Ruditapes philippinarium (clams), they were exposed to 0.005, 0.05 and 0.5µg/L endosulfan for 15 days [26]. The exposure resulted in the increase of EROD, GST, GSH, while SOD was seen to decrease.…”

“…The half-lives of DDT and HCH in surface soil were estimated as 6.7 and 4.9 years, respectively (Brevik et al 1996;Toan et al 2009). The impact of OCPs in aquatic organisms is more important than that of organophosphorus pesticides and considered really alarming (Alava et al 2011;Tao et al 2013) because OCP contents were higher (Serrano et al 1999;Hernández et al 2000;Fatta et al 2007). We choose to determine the OCP contents, the first generation of pesticides, because of their persistence in the environment and their alarming impact on aquatic organisms, estimating, thus, the old contamination in the Ichkeul LakeBizerta Lagoon complex.…”
