The physicochemical properties of soil and the unsaturated zone can have a large influence on the infiltration of precipitation into an aquifer. Soil permeability presents soil property that can be very variable. The main objectives of this study were to estimate differences in soil permeability in two dominant types of soils—Fluvisols and Eutric Cambisols—in the area of the Zagreb aquifer and determine the relationship between the physicochemical properties and the permeability of the analyzed soils. For this purpose, the particle size distribution, soil water retention curves (SWRCs), hydraulic parameters, and chemical properties of soils (i.e., electrical conductivity (EC), pH, carbonate content, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and total concentration of zinc (Zn)) from six soil profiles were observed. In general, the results show that Fluvisols have a smaller amount of clay and a higher amount of sand. Furthermore, particle size distribution indicates that Eutric Cambisols have smaller permeability and a slightly higher capacity for retention. In Eutric Cambisols, the percentages of clay, silt, and sand generally do not change with depth. On average, Fluvisols and Eutric Cambisols become impermeable when they reach different values of water content and effective saturation. All results suggest that Fluvisols generally have to desaturate more than Eutric Cambisols to become impermeable. The proportions of sand and Ks increases through the depth of all analyzed soils, while CEC, EC, and Zn decrease. The total Zn generally decrease with depth, which can be attributed to the aerodeposition in the surface horizons of the analyzed soils and their higher availability for binding/sorption elements. Generally, it can be seen that most Zn concentrations increase until 80 cm in depth, after which they decrease. This result indicates that, in these specific locations, the groundwater body is not under the influence of a potentially toxic metal, in this case Zn. Statistical analysis shows a strong correlation between Zn concentrations and some soil properties, such as soil texture and CEC. This may point to the prevalence of Zn retention. Furthermore, statistical results show that silt has a higher influence on the permeability of Eutric Cambisols than Fluvisols.

This paper presents the results of a lysimeter experiment in which a forest soil has been artificially spiked with rock fragments from natural copper (Cu) and cobalt (Co)-hills from Tenke-Fungurume (Democratic Republic of Congo). The Cu and Co contents of the percolating water have been analysed at repeated intervals and the impact of rock on the soil properties was evaluated at the end of the experiment. Five rocks were sampled in one copper hill. In natural conditions, these rock fragments located on the top of the hill are mixed to surface soil horizon along the slope through colluvial processes. The Cu and Co contents in rocks range respectively between 470 mg/kg (siliceous rock) and 140,000 mg/kg (shale) and between 450 mg/kg (dolostone) and 5300 mg/kg (shale). Rock fragments were mixed with two horizons (hemi-organic A with 2.7% total organic carbon (TOC), and mineral B with 0.3% TOC) of an acid (pH water < 4.5) acrisol under forest. The mixture was placed in 1 L lysimeters and left in Lubumbashi ex situ conditions during the rainy season. Percolating water was collected for six periods after and the Cu and Co contents have been analysed. At the end of the experiment, soil from the lysimeter was removed for pH, TOC, available nutrients and trace elements, CaCl 2-extractable Cu and Co analysis. The results show great differences between Cu and Co releases in the percolating solutions according to the nature of the rocks. The quantities released were correlated to the concentrations originally present in the unweathered rocks. Differences were also found between the A and B horizons, which indicate that the physicochemical properties of the soil influence reaction with the rocks. The differences between both horizons are mainly organic carbon content, cationic exchange capacity and nutrient content, which were higher in the A horizon. However, the pH of the A horizon was acidic compared with the B horizon. Significant correlations were found between extractable Cu and Co with concentrations of their leaching solution. En Région wallonne, des sols agricoles situés à proximité d’anciens sites de traitements de minerais ont été impactés par des retombées atmosphériques contaminées en cadmium (Cd), plomb (Pb) et zinc (Zn). Afin d’étudier l’impact de ces contaminations sur la qualité des productions agricoles, une étude du transfert en Cd et Zn du sol vers l’orge de printemps (Hordeum vulgare L.) a été réalisée sur une de ces zones contaminées. Dix-huit prélèvements d’orges ont été effectués en zone contaminée, 10 autres en zone témoin non contaminée et chacun d’eux a été subdivisé en trois sous-échantillons (tige, épi et grain). Un prélèvement a été réalisé dans l’horizon de surface du sol (de 0 à 20 cm) à l’emplacement de chaque prélèvement de plantes. Les concentrations disponibles et pseudo-totales en éléments traces et majeurs ainsi que pHeau, pHKCl, carbone organique total et azote total ont été mesurés sur les échantillons de sols. Les concentrations en Cd et Zn ont été dosées dans les grains, les épis et les tiges. Les concentrations en Cd et Zn mesurées dans les plantes récoltées sur la zone contaminée sont de 2 à 9 fois supérieures à celles mesurées dans les orges témoins. Il existe peu de relations entre la concentration en cadmium dans les grains (CdGrain), la concentration en zinc dans les grains (ZnGrain) et les propriétés des sols à l’exception des teneurs en Cd et Zn du sol. Une analyse Cate-Nelson a permis d’estimer CdGrain à 0,027 mg de Cd/kg matière sèche (MS) pour des teneurs pseudo-totales en Cd dans le sol allant de 0 à 1,23 mg/kg, et à 0,118 mg de Cd/kg de MS pour des teneurs pseudo-totales en Cd dans le sol allant de 1,24 à 6,87 mg/kg. ZnGrain est estimé à 19,2 mg/kg de MS pour des teneurs pseudo-totales de Zn dans le sol allant de 0 à 131 mg/kg, et à 40 mg/kg de MS pour des teneurs pseudo-totales de Zn dans le sol allant de 132 à 570 mg/kg. Une estimation du transfert en Cd et Zn reste toutefois complexe dans ces sols multicontaminés.
