Assimilation of zenith total delays in the AROME France convective scale model: a recent assessment

Abstract: A B S T R A C T The impact of assimilating GPS zenith total delays (ZTD) in the convective scale model AROME is assessed over a 1-month period in summer 2013. The experimental set-up is similar to the current operational usage at Me´te´o-France where the observing system has been expanded in July 2013 in a three-dimensional variational (3D-Var) data assimilation scheme with a 3-hour cycling. Three experiments are performed. In a baseline experiment the GPS ZTD provided through the E-GVAP programme are withdraw… Show more

“…The introduction of these atmospheric products showed a measurable improvement in the accuracy of the forecasts (Yan et al 2009;Mahfouf et al 2015;Wilgan et al 2016). Although the assimilation of ZWD data into climate models is a relatively new problem, a perfect example of the process is the ongoing assimilation of the ZWD time series into a model of the Uncertainty Estimation in Regional ReAnalysis (UERRA) Project managed by the UK Met Office.…”

“…This new version also performs 3DVAR analyses every hour instead of every 3 h to optimize the use of frequent observations. All conventional observations are assimilated together with wind profilers, winds from space-borne measurements (atmospheric motion vectors and scatterometers), Doppler winds (Montmerle and Faccani, 2009) and reflectivity (Wattrelot et al, 2014) from ground-based weather radars, satellite radiances and ground-based GPS measurements (Mahfouf et al, 2015).…”

“…Impact can be studied using e.g. observation simulation experiments (Storto and Randriamampianina, 2010;Mahfouf et al, 2015). The ability to model the observations requires careful consideration as the observation operator may need inputs that are unavailable, or are inaccurately diagnosed in a particular system.…”
