Association between Thrombophilia and the Post-Thrombotic Syndrome

Abstract: The post thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a chronic condition that develops in 20%–40% of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) patients. While risk factors that predispose to the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are widely known, factors that influence the development of PTS after DVT have not been well elucidated. Over 10% of the general population is affected by one or more identifiable inherited thrombophilias which have been shown to underlie at least 1/3 of cases of VTE. The various thrombophilias are import… Show more

“…In a cohort study of 310 subjects with thrombophilia by Zutt et al, protein S deficiency and Factor V Leiden were more prevalent significantly in the PTS group (p = 0.035 and p = 0.003 respectively) [ 13 ]. Results of the study are still conflicting regarding the association of thrombophilia and PTS [ 14 ].…”

“…Interestingly, the American Society of Hematology has recently published their “Choosing Wisely Campaign” in which they recommend against testing for thrombophilia in adult patients with VTE in the setting of major transient risk factors such as recent surgery, trauma, or prolonged immobility. 5 Recent systematic reviews have been conducted in thrombophilia and cerebral vein thrombosis, 6 postthrombotic syndrome, 7 and the effect of low molecular weight heparin on live birth and implantation rates 8 which demonstrate the need for further research in the field. Finally, there will clearly be more thrombophilias identified in the near future with a potential impact regarding how clinicians care for their patients.…”

“…(88) Otros estudios sugieren incluir la trombofilia en el diagnóstico diferencial del infarto de miocardio con arterias coronarias no oclusivas (MINOCA). (89) (90) Las trombofilias también pueden estar asociadas con accidentes cerebrovasculares en personas jóvenes por tromboembolismo venoso a través de un foramen oval permeable (91).…”
