Association between tumour necrosis-α gene polymorphisms and acne vulgaris in a Pakistani population

Abstract: Our data suggest that the TNF -308 G>A and TNF -238 G>A SNPs may contribute to the pathogenesis of acne in the study population. Furthermore, patients with severe acne showed an increased frequency of mutant TNF genotypes at -308 and -238 compared with patients with less severe acne.

“…Investigations about the association of TNF a polymorphisms and acne are limited in number. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] In our study, we did not find an association of TNF a-308 G>A and IL1 b-511 C<T genetic polymorphisms with acne and acne severity. In another study from Turkey, Baz et al investigated only the TNF a-308 polymorphism in a sample of acne patients living in the Mediterranean coast region having heterogeneous ethnic groups and reported that TNF a-308 GA genotype was significantly more frequent in acne patients.…”

“…On the other hand, female patients in Hungarian and Romanian population and male patients in Sicilian population showed significant difference for polymorphic variants. Investigations from different ethnic regions such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and three meta‐analyses which also included Chinese and Greek participants suggested that the ‐308 G/A polymorphism in the TNF α gene involves in acne risk . Among meta‐analyses, Li et al declared that TNF α‐308 AA genotype is significantly associated with acne severity and male acne patients.…”

“…) . In terms of polymorphism, four studies assessed a total of 638 patients with acne and 524 HCs for the TNF‐α ‐238 polymorphism, and all seven studies assessed a total of 1053 patients with acne and 1150 HCs for the TNF‐α ‐308 polymorphism . The minor allele frequency (MAF) ranged from 1.8% to 16.9% for TNF‐α ‐238 and 5.2% to 28.1% for TNF‐α ‐308.…”
