“…The likelihood of carrying a weapon on school property was 6 times higher in VOB who had been threatened or injured with a weapon or been in a physical fight on school property (last 12 months). Carrying a weapon was much more common in VOB previously threatened/injured, been in a physical fight and reported feeling unsafe at school . It is possible that the girls in this study with low ESE who reported carrying a weapon to school, were delayed in their development of emotion regulation and behavioral self‐control and were lacking in the skills to secure peer and professional assistance with issues at school related to aggression and violence.…”

“…Girls in this study reporting low ESE and carrying a weapon to school could be either physical or electronic “victims of bullying” (VOB); moreover, feeling unsafe at school and bringing a weapon to school for protection or aggression, increases their risk for violence/aggression via their reduced ESE and emotion regulation. Schapiro et al examined recent national YRBS data and found that the majority of VOB (past 12 months) were girls and in lower high school grades. Schapiro et al also found that VOB were twice as likely to carry weapons in school and carry a gun in general (last 30 days).…”

“…Previous research with YRBS 2011 data showed that school bullying victimization was associated with gun carrying (OR = 1.34; 95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.04, 1.74]), and weapon carrying at school (OR = 1.96; 95% CI = [1.61, 2.38]) (Schapiro, John, & Adesman, 2014). Other research with YRBS 2011 data showed that among female students, but not male students, school bullying victimization was significantly associated with carrying a weapon to school (female: OR = 1.9; 95% CI = [1.0, 3.5] vs. male: OR = 1.4, 95% CI = [0.9, 2.2]) (Hertz et al, 2015).…”

“…Bullying has been identified as an associated risk factor for weapon carrying, including gun carrying, among adolescents (Valdebenito et al, 2017 ; van Geel, Vedder, & Tanilon, 2014 ). In the United States, multiple studies have shown that adolescent victims of bullying were more likely to carry a weapon at school (Esselmont, 2014 ; Pham, Schapiro, John, & Adesman, 2017 ; Schapiro, John, & Adesman, 2014 ). Interestingly, being the perpetrator of bullying also increases the risk of weapon carrying (Dukes, Stein, & Zane, 2010 ; Valdebenito et al, 2017 ; Van Geel et al, 2014 ).…”
