Association of 5α-Reductase Inhibitors With Dementia, Depression, and Suicide

Abstract: ImportanceIn recent decades, there has been increased interest in the possible adverse neurological effects of 5α-reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs), which have been used mainly for benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenic alopecia. Numerous studies and reports have indicated associations of 5-ARIs with depression and suicide. However, most of these studies had methodological shortcomings, and very little is known about the potential association of 5-ARIs with dementia.ObjectiveTo investigate the association of … Show more

“…The current prevailing theories regarding the mechanism of hair miniaturization in AGA suggest that it is a hereditary condition caused by aberrant androgen sensitivity and activity 9,10 . However, the clinical effectiveness of anti-androgen therapy, such as the oral administration of nasteride and spironolactone, is limited, particularly in cases of moderate to severe AGA, coupled with several unexpected side effect [11][12][13] . Consequently, numerous studies are currently endeavoring to elucidate the potential pathogenic mechanism underlying AGA from alternative viewpoints.…”
