Association of Cataract Surgery With Traffic Crashes

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Cataracts are the most common cause of impaired vision worldwide and may increase a driver's risk of a serious traffic crash. The potential benefits of cataract surgery for reducing a patient's subsequent risk of traffic crash are uncertain. OBJECTIVE To conduct a comprehensive longitudinal analysis testing whether cataract surgery is associated with a reduction in serious traffic crashes where the patient was the driver.

“…Improved eye care can contribute to improving the sustainability of cities and communities (SDG11). Studies 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 show that improved vision enhances road safety, thereby contributing to safer cities. Although no studies met our inclusion criteria for the remaining SDGs, we contend that environmentally responsible eye health services would reduce carbon emissions and plastic waste, thereby contributing to progress towards the SDGs for affordable clean energy (SDG7), responsible consumption (SDG12), climate action (SDG13), life below water (SDG14), and life on land (SDG15).…”

“…Recent studies suggest that cataract surgery may improve all-cause survival, particularly among older adults, though equipoise persists ( Tseng et al., 2016 ; Zhu et al., 2016 ; Blundell et al., 2009 ; Fong et al., 2013 ). A variety of causal mechanisms have been considered, most founded upon an enhancement in visual acuity after surgery (e.g., reduced falls, reduced motor vehicle crashes) ( Schlenker et al., 2018 ; Tseng et al., 2012 ). Overlooked, however, are the known ramifications of light on mammalian biology and physiology.…”

“…Furthermore, there have been several studies that document adverse events arising from delay in cataract treatment, such as depression, falls, and traffic accidents. 11 13 It is possible that we might see a rise in these events in the Medicare population. For instance, a systematic review of 27 studies found that patients who waited more than 6 months for surgery had worse outcomes compared with patients who waited <6 weeks, such as worse vision and poor quality of life.…”
