Association of Immune Status with Recurrent Anal Condylomata in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Positive Patients

Abstract: PurposeAn anal condyloma is a proliferative disease of the genital epithelium caused by the human papillomavirus. This condition is most commonly seen in male homosexuals and is frequently recurrent. Some reports have suggested that immunosuppression is a risk factor for recurrence of a condyloma. Thus, we investigated the risk factors for a recurrent anal condyloma in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 85 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with and und… Show more

“…Under conditions of decreased cellular immunity such as with HIV will increase the recurrence of condyloma acuminata. Study by Sung et al, (2012) show that the average recurrence time of anal condyloma acuminata lesions in HIV patients was 5.1 months with a range of 1.3 months to 14.2 months. Decreased plasma zinc levels also affected recurrence of anogenital condyloma acuminata due to a decrease in cellular immunity.…”

“…However, given that the long median time of recurrence (over 3 years), recurrence of anal CA may be due to a new infection, recurrence at the same site, or development of a metachronous lesion. In HIV-1-infected patients it is common to have a multiple infections with several HPV types including high-risk types that is independent of immune status [ 23 , 24 ]. In our study, a 70% of patients were infected by HPV-16 or HPV-18.…”

“…The cutoff level used in this study was 350, because at the level below patients are more prone to be infected with opportunistic microorganisms. 13 Negative sexual behavior defined as those having more than one sexual partner, homosexual or bisexual, and other deviations in addition to no protection was used during sexual activity. In the study, it was no significant correlation with CA recurrence (p = 0.203).…”
