Association of sarcopenia with ideal cardiovascular health metrics among US adults: a cross-sectional study of NHANES data from 2011 to 2018

Abstract: ObjectiveThe American Heart Association (AHA) proposed the concept of ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) to reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality. We attempted to broaden the impact of CVH and further contribute to AHA 2030 goals by identifying the relationship between CVH and non-cardiovascular diseases such as sarcopenia.DesignCross-sectional surveySettingNational Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the USA from 2011 to 2018.ParticipantsThis study included participants with reliable fir… Show more

“…Our findings align with previous research indicating a correlation between dietary factors and sarcopenia. Diets abundant in fruits and vegetables are shown to prevent metabolic acidosis, diminish protein hydrolysis and amino acid catabolism, and lower the likelihood of sarcopenia ( 11 ). Diets high in fiber play a crucial role in reducing the risk of lower lean muscle mass ( 54 ).…”

“…A value of ALM standardized to BMI (ALM BMI ) was used to define sarcopenia 20 based on the criteria designated by a recent consensus meeting known as the “Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Sarcopenia Project”. Men were considered to have sarcopenia if the index ALM BMI < 0.789 and women < 0.512 21 .…”

“…The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a program designed to measure the health and nutrition status of adults and children in the US. A mass of data in the NHANES database has been analyzed extensively, which is of great help in unraveling the etiologies, understanding the epidemiology, and searching for novel biomarkers of different diseases [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. The method of “stratified multistage probability sampling” was adopted to screen out representative participants in the survey.…”
