Association of sex of the fetus in isolated fetal choroid plexus cysts.

Abstract: We sought to determine if an association exists between sex of the fetus and the finding of isolated fetal choroid plexus cysts. Of 131 fetuses, 62 were male (47.3%) and 69 were female (52.7%). No statistically significant differences were found in the maternal demographic parameters studied (age, race, gravidity, parity, sonogram timing) or descriptive cyst information obtained (location, number, dimensions, resolution), although bilaterality was more common in male fetuses. The determination that isolated ch… Show more

“…Failure to detect differences in cases versus controls based on fetal sex, maternal demographic variables and pregnancy outcomes is consistent with reports based on populationbased studies. 26 With respect to somatic growth, two small differences in size (head and abdominal circumference) emerged at 28 weeks only. Examination of Table 2 reveals that, with the exception of femur length, most values for CPC cases were consistently lower than those of controls.…”

“…Landy et al [4] stated that no parameters studied, including maternal demographics (age, race, median gravidity, and median parity), gestational weeks at the time of first and last sonograms, and choroid plexus cyst characteristics (location, number, dimensions, and resolution) are important on predicting aneuploidy. In their 116-patient study there were no aneuploidies.…”

“…Fetal choroid plexus cysts (CPC) are often detected during the second trimester ultrasound screening as fluid-filled structures within the lateral ventricles of the fetal brain and requires a need to formulate a protocol for management and counseling [1][2][3]. These cysts may be single/multiple, unilateral/bilateral [4]. They are detected in 1-3,6% of all fetuses, and 90% are resolved by 26-28th week of gestation [5].…”

“…Most commonly, CPCs are incidentally discovered during second-trimester ultrasound evaluations and are seen in a total of 1-3.6% of all fetuses [2]. These cysts can be single/multiple or unilateral/bilateral and are equally prevalent in males and females [3]. The clinical significance of CPCs remains a matter of debate.…”
