Assortative mating among rock‐dwelling cichlid fishes supports high estimates of species richness from Lake Malawi

Abstract: It has been estimated that Lake Malawi, Africa, contains 500–650 endemic species of cichlid fishes, the largest number of vertebrate species endemic to any comparable sized area on the planet. As many of these putative species cannot be distinguished anatomically, these estimates of species richness depend to a great extent on the assumption that sympatrically occurring male colour morphs represent biological species. We have tested this assumption using a combination of behavioural observations of courtship a… Show more

“…The blue-barred phenotype is an important male nuptial color conferring mating success (van Oppen et al, 1998;Svensson et al, 2011). We report that blue color is found exclusively in male F 2 , of both the BB and OB type (Figure 3).…”

“…We mapped the genetic basis of two color phenotypes with putatively conflicting roles in male versus female fitness (see below; Holzberg, 1978;Ribbink et al, 1983;van Oppen et al, 1998;Konings, 2007;Roberts et al, 2009;Svensson et al, 2011) and established the chromosomal linkage of each to XY and/or ZW sex loci. Our results support the concept that cichlid chromosome 5 hosts a female heterogametic (ZW) locus coincident with QTL for (female-associated) OB patterning (Streelman et al, 2003;Roberts et al, 2009;Ser et al, 2010), as well as male-associated blue color.…”

“…As model systems, these complexes yield many insights into the earlier phases of divergence between closely related, sympatric forms (e.g. Meyer 1993;Seehausen & van Alphen 1998;van Oppen et al 1998), and provide clues as to to how incipient species maintain their integrity in sympatry (e.g. Grant 1993;Grant Correspondence: Michael A. McCartney.…”

“…The two earliest suggested methods of speciation are allopatric speciation (Fryer 1959;Fryer & Iles 1972;Greenwood 1984), which may have resulted from lake level fluctuations, and sympatric speciation driven by intrinsic isolating mechanisms (Turner & Burrows 1995;Oppen et al 1998;Takahashi et al 2001;Genner & Turner 2005). The relatively young age of about 0.3-0.5 MYA (Genner et al 2007) of the mbuna species flock, comprising of an estimated 250 species, suggests that some mode of divergence other than the traditionally accepted model of allopatry has operated in Lake Malaŵi.…”
